季路问事鬼神，子曰：“未能事人，焉能事鬼？”曰：“敢问死。”曰：“未知生，焉知死？"
译文
季路问如何侍奉鬼神。孔子说："连侍奉活人都还做不好，又怎能侍奉鬼神呢？"季路又说："冒昧地请问死是怎么回事。"孔子说："生的道理还没有弄明白，又怎么能明白死呢？"
ENGLISH
Jilu asked how one should serve the spirits of the dead. The Master said: "When you are not yet able to serve the living, how can you serve the spirits?" Jilu ventured further: "May I ask about death?" The Master said: "When you do not yet understand life, how can you understand death?"
注释
①敢：冒昧之词，用于表敬。
颜渊死了，孔子非常悲痛，说：“这是老天要了我的命啊，这是老天要了我的命啊！”
为什么孔子这么悲痛呢？因为最有可能继承孔子道统的就是颜渊。这颜渊死了，自己一身本事没人能传承了，当然悲痛。
圣人最担心的是自己的思想失传。其他弟子担当不起这个重任，只有颜渊最可能担当传承孔子道统的重任。
