Chen Kang asked Boyu, the Master's son: "Have you received any instruction different from what the rest of us have been taught?" Boyu replied: "Not at all. Once my father was standing alone in the courtyard, and I hastened past. He asked, 'Have you studied the Odes?' I replied, 'Not yet.' He said, 'Without studying the Odes, one will have no words to speak.' I then withdrew and studied the Odes. On another day, he was again standing alone, and I hastened past once more. He asked, 'Have you studied the rites?' I replied, 'Not yet.' He said, 'Without studying the rites, one will have no ground on which to stand.' I then withdrew and studied the rites. These two things are all I have heard." Chen Kang withdrew, greatly pleased, and said: "I asked one question and learned three things: I learned of the Odes, I learned of the rites, and I learned that the exemplary man maintains a proper distance even from his own son."
