译文
长沮和桀溺两人并肩耕地。孔子从那里经过,让子路去向他们打听渡口在哪里。长沮问道:"那位手持缰绳驾车的人是谁?"子路说:"是孔丘。"长沮问:"是鲁国那个孔丘吗?"子路说:"正是。"长沮说:"既然是他,早就知道渡口在哪里了。"子路又去问桀溺。桀溺问道:"你是谁?"子路说:"我是仲由。"桀溺问:"是鲁国孔丘的门徒吗?"子路回答说:"是的。"桀溺说:"天下大势滔滔,到处都是这般乱象,又有谁能改变得了呢?再说,你与其追随那位躲避某些人的人,哪里比得上追随我们这些避世隐居之人呢?"说罢,继续覆土平地,耕作不辍。子路回来把这些话告诉了孔子。孔子怅然若失,说道:"我既不能与鸟兽为伍,若不与世间众人相处,又能与谁相处呢?天下若是太平有道,我孔丘也就不会投身于变革之中了。"

Changju and Jieni were working together in the fields. Confucius passed by and sent Zilu to inquire of them where the ford was. Changju said, "Who is that holding the reins in the carriage?" Zilu replied, "It is Kong Qiu." "Is that Kong Qiu of Lu?" "It is." Changju said, "Then he already knows where the ford is." Zilu then put the question to Jieni. Jieni said, "Who are you?" "I am Zhongyou." "A disciple of Kong Qiu of Lu?" "I am." Jieni said, "The whole world is swept away like a surging flood — who can change it? Rather than following a man who merely avoids certain people, would it not be better to follow those of us who shun the world altogether?" With that he went on harrowing the soil without pause. Zilu went and reported this to Confucius. Confucius said with a sigh, "I cannot flock together with the birds and beasts. If I am not to live among the people of this world, then with whom am I to live? If the Way prevailed under Heaven, I would have no need to set about changing things."

①长沮(jǔ)、桀(jié)溺(nì):两位隐士,真实姓名和身世不详。耦(ǒu)而耕:两个人合力耕作。 ②津:渡囗。 ③执舆:执辔(揽着缰绳)。本是子路的任务。因为子路下车去问渡囗,暂时由孔子代替。 ④是知津矣:这话是认为孔子周游列国,应该熟悉道路。 ⑤谁以易之:与谁去改变它呢?以,与。 ⑥而:同“尔",你,指子路。辟:通“避"。 ⑦耰(yōu):播下种子后,用土覆盖上,再用耙将土弄平,使种子深人土里,鸟不能啄,这就叫耰。 ⑧怃(wǔ)然:失意的样子。 长沮、桀溺,两个站在水边耕地的人,一个身材长,就叫做长,站在水边,所以叫做长沮。一个身材壮实,叫做桀,所以叫做桀溺。这两个名字都是代指。 孔子驾车从这个地方过,看见了他们,让子路去问渡口在哪里,估计是要渡河。长沮说,那个拿着缰绳的人是谁啊?子路说,是我的老师孔丘啊。是鲁国那个孔丘吗?子路说,是啊。长沮说,既然是那个孔丘,天下事他全都知道,怎么不知道渡口在哪里呢?还要来问我? 这就是讽刺孔子了,您不是牛吗?厉害吗?一个小小的渡口在哪里,还需要问我?子路看这人不怀好意,不好交流,就换桀溺问。桀溺说,您是谁啊?子路说,我是仲由啊。是鲁国的孔丘的徒弟吗?子路说,是啊。桀溺说,这天下滔滔,您要顺应天时,天下已经坏的没办法了,世道不好,到处都是一个样,您这老师东奔西跑的,改变不了什么的,还要躲避坏人,找到明君,我看您们是在做梦啊。不如跟我们一样隐居了算了,做个隐士,也没必要躲避坏人了。找什么渡口,这天下渡不了,没办法,别找了。然后就不搭理子路了,手上继续翻地,播种,耕地。 子路只好回来跟老师报告情况。孔子怅然失望的说道,我没有办法跟鸟兽在一起,我不跟人打交道跟谁打交道呢?天下无道,正需要我这样的人来改变,来努力,难道都学隐士这样放弃吗?如果天下有道了,我当然不需要改变,当然可以选择隐居,不用东奔西跑。不过天下还需要我啊。 这一段,就是孔子入世的世界观,自已有本事,有能力,有才华,就要展现给社会,就要贡献给社会,躲起来干啥?与鸟兽一样?天下无道,才需要我们仁人志士不断地努力去改变。天下有道了,我们安享太平就行了。纯粹的躲避,也不是上策。这或许是儒家思想跟道家思想的根本区别吧。儒家思想,就是想要做点事情,而且必须做点事情,立功、立言、立德。我们一定要努力为社会贡献点什么,而不是浪费自己的才华、生命。 所以,后来孔子虽然没有找到明君去施展自己的抱负,但是也著书立说,广传弟子,也算对中华文明做出了极大的贡献。
