The recluses of former times were: Boyi, Shuqi, Yuzhong, Yiyi, Zhuzhang, Liu Xiahui, and Shaolian. The Master said: "Those who neither compromised their will nor suffered humiliation to their person — such were Boyi and Shuqi, were they not!" Of Liu Xiahui and Shaolian, he said: "They compromised their will and suffered humiliation to their persons, yet their words were in accordance with moral principle and their conduct was in accordance with careful deliberation. That is all one can say of them." Of Yuzhong and Yiyi, he said: "They lived in retirement and spoke their minds freely; they kept their persons pure and their withdrawal from office was in accordance with sound judgment. As for me, I am different from all these — I have no preconceived notion of what is permissible and what is not."
